Congress slams Centre over 'nationalism' issue

New Delhi, Mar 21 (IBNS) The Congress on Monday slammed the Central government over the issue of 'nationalism; and said the 'bogey of nationalism' has been raised to cover the inadequacies and failures of the Narendra Modi-led government's in past 22 months.

"The only reason the bogey of nationalism is being raised is to cover the inadequacies & failures of the past 22 months," Congress leader Manish Tewari said while addressing a press conference here.

Attacking the BJP, the Congress leader said: "A party, whose predecessors & ideological mentors had no role to play in the freedom struggle are now raising the issue of Nationalism."

"Even post 1947, not one leader RSS or BJP who has sacrificed for the unity & integrity of the nation," he said.

"Its ironic that pseudo nationalist have become the contractors of nationalism in the country," he said.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday said his government is in favour of freedom of speech and expression but the feeling of nationalism should co-exist.

Referring to the controversy surrounding the 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' chant, Tewari said: "When Netaji Bose said Jai Hind & Bhagat Singh said Inquilab Zindabad were they less nationalist than those who said Bharat Mata ki Jai? Bharat Mata ki Jai, Jai Hind, Mera Bharat Mahan are synonyms of the same emotion."
