Confident Group chairman CJ Roy died by suicide on Friday after allegedly shooting himself at his office in Bengaluru while Income Tax raids were underway, police said. He was 57.

According to the police, the incident occurred within the limits of Ashok Nagar Police Station. Roy was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“An incident has taken place wherein the Confident Group chairman shot himself. He was shifted to a hospital but was declared dead,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh told the media.

The police commissioner added that the Income Tax Department had been conducting searches at premises linked to Roy for the past two to three days.

“Police are in touch with the family members, who are currently not in India. As of now, it is a case of self-shooting,” he said.

Earlier on Thursday, the Income Tax Department carried out raids on companies associated with Roy. During the searches, officials allegedly found that he possessed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

NDTV, citing sources, said Roy was under severe distress following the repeated Income Tax raids.

A prominent real estate developer, CJ Roy headed the Confident Group, which has a strong presence across southern India, particularly in Kerala and Karnataka.

A native of Kochi in Kerala, Roy had also ventured into film production and was associated with Malayalam cinema, including the big-budget Mohanlal-starrer Casanova (2012).

The Confident Group had also served as the title sponsor for several seasons of the Malayalam television reality show Bigg Boss Malayalam, hosted by Mohanlal.

Police said further investigation is underway.
