CBI to prosecute former Maharashtra CM Chavan following permission from governor Rao in the Adarsh scam

| | Feb 04, 2016, at 08:31 pm
Mumbai, Feb 4 (IBNS) Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao on Thursday has given his approval to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to prosecute Ashok Chavan, the state's former chief minister for his alleged role in the Adarsh Housing Society scam.

According to media reports, while the Congress Party has termed it as political vendetta, the BJP sees it as the law taking its own course.

The CBI had charge-sheeted Chavan and 12 others in the Adarsh scam in July 2012.

Although Chavan quit as the chief minister in November 2010, he could not be prosecuted without permission from the state's governor.

The Adarsh Housing Society is a posh, 31-storey building constructed on prime land in Colaba, Mumbai, which was earmarked for the welfare of war widows and India’s Ministry of Defence personnel.

It was alleged that politicians, bureaucrats and military officers flouted rules regarding land ownership, zoning, floor space index and membership to get themselves flats allotted in this cooperative society at below-market rates.

It has also been alleged that Chavan's relatives got flats here.
