CBI to probe Assam minority student leader murder case
Following the Assam government’s request, the Centre has handed over the investigation of the murder case of the minority student leader to the CBI.
A state government press release said Union Minister of State (i/c) for DONER, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pension etc. Dr Jitendra Singh informed this to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal over phone on Monday.
The ABMSU president was killed by unidentified miscreants at Titaguri market in Kokrajhar district on Aug 1.
Assam government has already constituted a Special Investigative Team (SIT), headed by Inspector General of Police Anurag Tankha, to inquire into the brutal murder and provided ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the slain ABMSU leader.
According to the reports, two motorcycle borne unidentified assailants opened fire from an AK-47 rifle at Lafikul at a shop in Titaguri market in Kokrajhar district, while he had gone to buy tiles.
Seriously injured Lafikul was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
In the firing incident, the shopkeeper also injured and admitted at a hospital.
Following the incident, Assam police had arrested the PSO of Lafikul identified as Jakir Ali in connection with the killing incident.
In past a month, several organizations had protested against the killing incident and demanded the state government to arrest the main culprit.
