Calcutta High Court orders an inquiry into Cyclone Amphan relief corruption
Kolkata/UNI: Calcutta High Court on Tuesday asked the Comptroller and Auditor General of India to investigate into the alleged Cyclone Amphan’s relief corruption incident and submit a report in the next three months.
A two-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice T B Radhakrishnan directed that a list of those who had received relief should be made.
“It is also important to know whether all the victims have received relief and if there is corruption in the distribution of relief, it is necessary to find out which government officials are responsible for it,” the bench observed.
The court asked the state government what steps had been taken by the administration against them and filed an affidavit detailing its steps in this case.
In May this year, Cyclone Amphan caused extensive damage to large areas of South Bengal.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced financial assistance to the victims.
Relief was distributed on the basis of the application made by the victims. If a house is severely damaged, compensation of up to Rs 20,000 is paid.
The opponents has, however, alleged that there has been widespread corruption in the distribution of relief.
