New Delhi, Feb 18 (IBNS) BJP MP Gopal Shetty sparked an outrage on Thursday after he termed farmer suicide as a fashionable trend, according to reports.

Speaking to TV reporters, the MP from north Mumbai said that "Not every farmer commits suicide due to hunger or unemployment," adding, "it is a competition and a fashionable trend."

Shetty said, "Some do it for the compensation. If the Maharashtra government is giving away five lakhs, some neighbouring states are offering as much as seven lakhs."

Post his comment, the Congress took a swipe at the BJP and tweeted: "40% malnourished in Gujarat, 12,360 farmer suicides. But, according to Modi Sarkar this is just fashion."
