Dehradun, Mar 18 (IBNS) BJP lawmaker Ganesh Joshi, accused of a brutal attack on police horse Shaktiman, has been arrested.

Reports said Joshi has been charged with cruelty and maiming an animal.

The 14-year-old horse was allegedly beaten during the BJP protest and it severely hurt one of its hind legs.

Television footage showed the  BJP lawmaker  holding a stick and poised to strike, but is never seen hitting the horse.

A BJP worker seen dragging down the policeman riding Shaktiman and pulling at its saddle and reins, causing its fall, was arrested on Thursday..

The animal was operated upon by 10 doctors but could not stand on its own.

On Thursday night, doctors said they were forced to amputate the broken limb as they feared the horse would die of gangrene.

Facing severe criticism from all corners, Ganesh Joshi had visited the horse on Thursday. He said: "I came here out of humanity...I didn't hit the horse but an innocent animal has suffered."

Following his arrest, Joshi alleged that he was being targeted by the Congress Government of Uttarakhand.
