BJP disrespected Nehru, Gandhi: Congress in Rajya Sabha over Kovind speech

| | Jul 26, 2017, at 06:26 pm
New Delhi, July 26 (IBNS): Referring to President Ram Nath Kovind's first speech where the names of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi were missing, Congress in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday attacked the ruling BJP for disrespecting the father of the nation and India's first Prime Minister.

Ram Nath Kovind was the Presidential nominee of the ruling BJP-led NDA. Kovind took charge of his office on Tuesday.

Congress leader Anand Sharma said Kovind's speech was disrespectful for both Nehru and Gandhi.

However, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley countered Sharma's statement and urged the Deputy Chairman to expunge it.

Jaitley said: "The whole speech has to be expunged."

"The statement should be expunged because names of certain constitutional heads should not be taken in the Parliament," the Union FM added.

Following the heated exchanges between the Congress and the BJP, the Upper House was also adjourned for a while.

Kovind became the 14th President of the country and second Dalit 'first citizen' after K R Narayanan. He succeeded Pranab Mukherjee.
