Bihar Floods displace over 9 million villagers, 230 dead as relief work picks up speed

Patna, Aug 18 (TheBiharPost/IBNS): The prevailing flood situation turned further grim on Friday as the floodwaters entered fresh areas, brings untold miseries.

According to a report in Hindi daily Dainik Jagran, floods have claimed 230 lives so far although official figures claim only 119 deaths till Thursday.

Disaster management department secretary Pratyay Amit said Bihar may get relief from current spate of floods in the in the next one week as the Indian meteorological department has predicted less rains.

As per an official reports, the weeklong floods have displaced some 93 lakh (9.3 million) people settled across 16 districts of Bihar.

Authorities have so far evacuated over 400,000 villagers and lodged them in 1238 relief camps.

Seven companies of the armies and around 40 teams of NDRF and SDRF have been pressed into service to launch rescue and relief operations,


Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said the relief camps would function until the people withdraw from there.
