Bengal polls: Mamata Banerjee to visit violence-hit Cooch Behar on Apr 14, says 'nothing can stop me'

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who blamed the Centre for Saturday's violence in Cooch Behar's Sitalkuchi constituency during the fourth phase of the Assembly election, hit out at the Election Commission on Sunday over the three-day ban on politicians and announced that she will visit the district on Apr 14.

"EC should rename MCC as Modi Code of Conduct! BJP can use all its might but NOTHING in this world can stop me from being with my people & sharing their pain," she wrote on Twitter.

"They can restrict me from visiting my brothers & sisters in Cooch Behar for 3 days but I WILL be there on the 4th day!" the Bengal CM added.

On Saturday, the Election Commission had announced that no politicians can enter Cooch Behar for three days following the violence that erupted during election process.

Hours before the election panel's announcement, Banerjee had said she will visit the site on Sunday.

Banerjee on Sunday slammed Modi too and called him an "incompetent" Prime Minister.

"The Prime Minister came and gave clean chit to the CISF. He is an incompetent Prime Minister. We have an incompetent Home Minister. They can come for election campaigns but what they are doing is threatening people," she said.

On Saturday morning, four persons were killed and few others were injured as CISF personnel performing poll duties at Polling Booth no. 126 in Cooch Behar's Sitalkuchi opened fire at around 9:45 am. as a local mob at a large number had allegedly attacked them outside the polling station.

Hitting out at the central forces, Banerjee said: "They (Centre) are saying the CISF acted in self-defense but no policeman was injured in the firing."

"As per the model code of conduct, we have to take permission before compensating the families of the deceased from the government. So we have decided to compensate from our party," she said.

Issuing a statement on Saturday night, the Election Commission said that the firing by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) outside the polling station in Sitalkuchi was absolutely necessary at that moment as the mob had attempted snatching jawans' rifles during the violence.

PM Modi condoled the deaths at a rally in Bengal but also slammed Banerjee and her party soon after the incident.

"What happened in Cooch Behar is sad... I offer condolences to bereaved families. Mamata Didi and her goons are jittery because of the groundswell of support for the BJP," Modi had said.
