Avalanche: Four soldiers martyred in Siachen

Udhampur, Jan 4 (IBNS) The Indian Army on Monday said four Army Jawans ,who were deployed in the Siachen Glacier, have been killed due to an avalanche which hit the region on Sunday.

"On 03 January 2016, four Army Jawans who were deployed in the Siachen Glacier were on a patrol as part of a route opening party. While performing the task, the patrol came under an avalanche. A rescue mission was immediately launched, however despite all possible efforts the jawans could not be saved," read an official statement.

"The mortal remains of Havildar Dorjey Gason, Havildar Tsewang Norboo, Rifleman Jigmat Chosdup and Rifleman Mohmmad Yusuf were retrieved from the avalanche site and handed over to their next of kin," it said.

The jawans will be cremated with full military honours.

Lt General DS Hooda, Army Commander, Northern Command has expressed his condolences to the families of the martyrs.
