New Delhi/IBNS: In an attempt to curb the Coronavirus spread, the Haryana government on Friday announced that all shops and offices in the state will remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Only essential services have been exempted from the restrictions.

In a tweet, Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij wrote: "All offices and shops except essential will remain closed in Haryana on every Saturday and Sunday due to #COVID__19"

The state has registered over 50,000 cases of coronavirus and 578 deaths.

According to media reports, restrictions would not be imposed on people and traffic movement.

This comes a day after Punjab announced daily night curfews and weekend lockdown in all 167 cities and towns in the state.

Worryingly India on Thursday added over 68,000 new Covid-19 cases and 983 deaths taking the overall tally of infections to more than 29,00,000.

So far in the country of 36 states and union territories, 54,849 people have succumbed to the contagion since the first Covid case was reported in late January.
