1 killed in J&K avalanche

Srinagar, Jan 30 (IBNS) A young boy was killed on Saturday while two others were injured when they got struck in a snow avalanche in Machil area of North Kashmir near the Line of Control as the area witnessed heavy snowfall for the past two days.

Giving details about the incident, a police officer told IBNS that the  avalanche hit the small village Chuntiwari Balla area of Machhil resulting on spot death of a 15-year-old boy while as two  others suffered injuries.

The incident occurred  when the three teenagers were on way to local seminary got struck in an avalanche; however locals and police rushed to the spot and saved the lives of two boys

The deceased were identified as Mehrajudin Khan while the injured persons have been identified as Javid Ahmad Khan and Abdul Rashid Mir of Chuntiwari Balla, Machhil.

Friday, the local administration had issued the avalanche warning  for Machhal sector as well as Chokibal- Tangdhar, Keran sector, Gurez  sector, Naugam-Kaiya in the frontier district.

Meanwhile, Defense spokesman of the Indian Army on Saturday evening said in a press release that Army  launched a swift rescue mission in the aftermath of an avalanche in the higher reaches of T Santwari, 11 Km from Macchal Tehsil in Kupwara district and saved precious lives.

The spokesman said the rescue mission was able to successfully evacuate – Javed and Qaisar- but the third boy Mehraj Khan succumbed to his grievous injuries.
