Srinagar: An avalanche hit Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg on Thursday, resulting in the death of one foreign national, media reports said.

Another foreigner is currently unaccounted for. Further, one foreigner was rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital, reported India Today.

"Around 1400 (2 pm) hours today, an avalanche was recorded in Gulmarg, trapping three foreigners. Tragically, one among them is dead, one injured, and one still remains missing," District Disaster Management Authority was quoted as saying by the publication.

The Kongdoori slopes were hit by an avalanche, trapping several skiers. According to reports, the foreigners had ventured onto the ski slopes without the company of local residents.

Rescue and search operations are being conducted by both the army and a patrolling team from the Jammu and Kashmir administration.

Another avalanche occurred on Wednesday in a steep area of Sonamarg along the Srinagar-Leh road, causing an obstruction in the flow of water in the Sindh stream.

Over the past three days, Kashmir has experienced moderate to heavy snowfall, heightening the risk of avalanches in the valley's hilly and mountainous regions.
