Nashik/IBNS: A sweet shop in Nashik has grabbed attention during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations with its ‘Golden Modak’, a premium version of the traditional sweet offered to Lord Ganesha.

Located at Vidya Vikas Circle in Nashik, Sagar Sweets has unveiled the modak coated with edible gold and priced at a staggering Rs 27,000 per kilogram.

The unusually priced sweet has become a centre of attraction for buyers looking to add a luxurious touch to their Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

What makes the Golden Modak special?

The highlight of the sweet is its coating of edible gold, which gives the traditional modak a distinctive appearance and makes it considerably more expensive than conventional varieties.

The Golden Modak has drawn curiosity among customers, with several buyers visiting the shop to get a glimpse of the festive delicacy.

Why is modak important during Ganesh Chaturthi?

Modak is traditionally considered one of Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweets and is among the most popular offerings made during Ganesh Chaturthi, particularly in Maharashtra.

According to Hindu traditions and popular legends, Ganesha is associated with modak and is also known as ‘Modakpriya’, meaning one who loves modak.

The sweet is also associated with wisdom, knowledge and spiritual fulfilment. Its sweet filling is traditionally linked with the rewards of knowledge, while the outer covering is sometimes interpreted as representing the effort involved in attaining it.

Why do devotees offer 21 modaks?

In several traditions, devotees offer 21 modaks to Lord Ganesha during puja. The number carries ritual significance, although interpretations of its symbolism vary across traditions.

Modak is also viewed as a symbol of sweetness, happiness and prosperity, making it an auspicious offering during the festival.

Ukadiche modak remains a favourite

In Maharashtra, ukadiche modak, the steamed version made with rice flour and traditionally filled with coconut and jaggery, remains particularly popular during Ganesh Chaturthi.

While the traditional sweet continues to dominate festive celebrations, the Golden Modak in Nashik has added a luxurious twist to the much-loved offering this year.
