Bihar Museum beats Louvre, New York’s Met to break into world’s top 10. Timing and ticket details here
Bihar Museum has secured a place among the world’s top 10 museums, ranking ahead of Paris’ Louvre and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on the 2026 World’s 100 Best Museums list compiled by Germany-based independent travel guide Worth a Journey.
The museum, located in Patna, ranked ninth on the list, placing it one position ahead of the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Spread across more than 13 acres, Bihar Museum showcases the state’s rich cultural heritage through a modern, state-of-the-art facility.
Inaugurated in 2015 in the Bihar capital, the museum attracts visitors from across India and abroad. Its extensive collection features historical artefacts spanning the region’s early civilisations through 1764.
The museum also houses a dedicated Children’s Gallery and a souvenir shop, offering visitors an opportunity to explore Bihar’s heritage and take home a memento of their visit.
Worth a Journey said its 2026 rankings were drawn from an analysis of more than one million venues to compile 36 lists of the world’s 100 best places.
“We have one mission: find the places that are truly worth a journey,” editor-in-chief Jakob Schwichtenberg said in a statement.
“The world has enough popularity contests and enough lists only critics appreciate. We rank the places that amaze the people who actually go,” he added.
Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología topped the global ranking.
