UP: 32 killed by lightning strikes, thunderstorm

Lucknow/UNI: At least 32 people lost their lives while over 30 were injured in Uttar Pradesh due to lightning and thunderstorm that struck the Poorvanchal region of the state last night, police said on Friday.

Of these deaths, 14 were reported from Gorakhpur-Basti division with Deoria district witnessing the highest nine deaths.

Police said that the farmers working in the agriculture fields were struck by the lightning.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

The CM has directed the concerned districts to provide all assistance to the affected families.

While 9 deaths were reported in Deoria district, 6 in Prayagraj, 3 each in Barabanki and Ambedkarnagar, 2 deaths were received from Sidharthnagar and one each from Maharajganj, Kushingar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Rae Bareli, Unnao, Fatehpur, Jaunpur, Sonebhadra and Sultanpur.

The injured have been admitted to the hospitals.
