Kendrapara/UNI: Prawn dykes, spread over an area of 100 hectares of forest land at Saralikuda under Mahakalapada block, were demolished by forest personnel of Bhitarkanika National Park.

The forest personnel of Mahakalapada forest Range with the help of Jamboo Marine police and the local executive magistrate on Monday demolished prawn dykes (prawn gheries) set up illegally encroaching forest land within Saralikuda protected forest under Bhitarkanika National park.

The  forest departmant has planned to regenerate mangrove vegetation on the demolished  prawn gheries.

Soon, a case will be registered against the prawn mafias for establishing prawn gheries illegally by denuding mangrove covers on forest land.

Sources said several prawn gheries were set up illegally under Hetamundia reserved forest, Saralikudha, Jogidanakuda, Sana Tubi, and Hasina Kandha forest land under Mahakalapada Forest Range.

Some businessmen of the district as well as the neighbouring port town Paradip had illegally encroached the forest land and converted into dollar spinning prawn gheries.

The regeneration of mangrove species in the area is the need of the hour as it would protect Odisha's coastal region from nature’s fury, environmentalists said.
