Nashik/UNI: More than 1,500 trees were charred when unidentified youths set them on fire in Lonjai village near Vinchur town of Niphad taluka here, report said on Wednesday.

According to Vinchur Panchayat Samiti member Sanjay Shewale, the arson took place on Sunday when unidentified youths torched the trees planted on two acres forest land.

As the smoke billowed in the air, Shewale told, he and other villagers rushed to the scene and made relentless efforts to douse the fire.

The plantation gutted include trees of black plum, guava, custard apple, tamarind, among other varieties.

The locals as well as several social outfits have sought police investigation into the bizarre incident.
