Jalandhar moves to build green, plastic-free future

Jalandhar, Jul 1 (UNI): In order to make the district garbage-free, the administration and Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar will work jointly to encourage the residents to give their whole-hearted support for clean and green Jalandhar, by sensitising them under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Presiding over a meeting of SDMs and Executive Officers of Municipal Committees, DC Varinder Kumar Sharma and Municipal Commissioner Diparva Lakra said that concentrated efforts must be made to educate the residents about various ways, in which they can keep the district clean.

They said that intensive activities, including awareness rallies, must be organised in every part of the district, where the residents take pledge to shun the use of plastic carry bags, segregation of dry and solid waste in different coloured garbage bins, persuading the people for compost pits, besides several other measures, to maintain cleanliness in the city, on a daily basis.

The SDMs, along with the team of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) and concerned EOs, should conduct surprise checking in their sub-divisions against the plastic carry bags, as the government has banned all kind of plastics in the state, they said.

They asked the EOs to review the work of motivators daily implementing the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan effectively and ensure source segregation from house-to-house, which can make clean and green Jalandhar.

They said the main thrust of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is to ensure that people are made aware of the fact that cleanliness of the city and their surroundings is the duty of everybody. They said that every one of us especially the youth must come forward to make clean and green Jalandhar.

They said the SDMs should monitor the drive personally for motivating all stakeholders in the rural areas to in the cleanliness drive.

They asked the officials to educate the people that wet waste includes cooked or uncooked food, egg shells, flowers, vegetables, waste of vegetables, wastage of plants, etc should be kept in the green coloured garbage bin.

Similarly, dry solid waste includes old newspapers, copies, cardboard and cardboard boxes, tetra packs; old and discarded clothes etc and they should be kept in blue coloured garbage bin.

Joint commissioner of the municipal corporation Aashika Jain detailed the officers regarding Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, construction and demolition waste management rules, plastic waste management rules through a presentation.

They told the officials to put their best efforts in making the campaign a huge success in Jalandhar.
