Intense rainfall submerges Mumbai, heavy rains predicted in the city for next 2 days
Mumbai, Aug 4 (UNI) The intense spells of rain, which were continuing since Saturday, have battered this metropolis, by hampering it's rail services and inundating several commercial suburbs, dotting the commercial capital of the country, also called the Maximum City.
According to reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) rescued around 400 people, who were trapped in floodwater in Kranti Nagar, Sandesh Nagar and Jari Mari areas of the Kurla sub-urb.
In the Church Road-Dahanukarwadi areas of Kandivali, temporary rafts of wooden board were being ferried around, to help the people in distress.
The two arms of Suburban Railway - Central and Harbour - were marred by water-logging, which threw the daily train schedule off the wheel.
The train services on the Suburban Railway's third arm, Western line, however, plied without delay.
The monsoon rage wrecked havoc in Mumbai's adjoining districts of Thane and Palghar, as well as Konkan division's duo districts- Raigad and Ratnagiri.
Reports reaching here from Raigad district said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) braved the surging water, to save around 60 people.
In Thane district, the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, owing to flooding of the sub-stations, resorted to power cuts, blacking out 1.5 lakh customers, whereas the NDRF languished to rescue 35 villagers, trapped in flood waters in Khadavali town.
People inhabiting the villages located in the close proximity of the overflowing Barvi dam, were told to abandon their respective areas.
In Palghar district, a tenth class student was washed away in floods.
Amidst all the uproar, the Meteorological Department and the BMC, warned people not to venture near beaches in the city.
The commercially-significant places of Andheri, Santacruz, Bandra, Dadar, Ghatkopar, Kurla and Mulund reported water-logging, while other areas of Kings Circle, Sion, Vikhroli, Khar, Bhandup, Dahisar, Borivali and Kandivali witnessed similar civic problems.
At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, several flights were operating, with delays of around 30 minutes, said the officials.
According to BMC, the Maximum City recorded 116 mm rainfall, while it's adjoining sub-urbs received 195 mm, till Sunday evening.
With intense rains forecast over the next two days, the civic body, along with the trio verticals of the Armed Forces, have been kept on high alert, for tackling any unforeseen emergency.
