Assam flood : Over 14.17 lakh people of 25 districts affected, eight people die
Guwahati, July 14 (IBNS) : Eight people were killed and over 14.17 lakh people were affected as flood situation worsened in 25 out of 33 districts in Assam.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), eight persons have lost their lives due to flood and landslide in the state so far.
A total of 2217 villages in 80 revenue circles of 25 districts in the state have been affected in the current flood.
The affected districts are – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hojai, Nagaon, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, West Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Cachar and Dhubri.
Barpeta, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Bongaigaon, Golaghat are the worst-hit districts among the flood-hit districts in the state.
Over 5.21 lakh people have been affected alone in Barpeta district, while, 1.38 lakh people affected in Dhemaji, around 95,000 people in Morigaon, 83,000 people in Bongaigaon, 67,000 people in Golaghat, 66,000 people in Majuli, 64,000 people have been affected in Lakhimpur district.
This year, over 16.09 lakh people have been affected by the flood in 27 districts.
On the other hand, the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above danger level marks in various places in the state following incessant rains.
The flood waters have submerged 51,752 hectare crop lands.
Over 8 lakh big and small animals have been affected in the current flood.
The administration has set up 62 relief camps and 172 relief distribution centres in the flood-hit districts and a total 20,047 people have taken shelter in the camps.
“There was no such flood in last three years, but in this year, the water level of the Brahmaputra river has increased and rainfall also increased. 25 districts of Assam are affected by flood. We are conducting relief and rescue operations through the SDRF and district administration. Relief materials have been distributed to the flood affected people. 2217 villages, 80 revenue circles and 25 districts are affected in the flood. 14,06,711 people are affected in this flood. As of now 62 relief camps and 172 relief distribution centres are operational and 20,047 people have taken shelter in the camps. Highlands were constructed in Kaziranga and the animals have taken shelter there and the food items have been provided them through the forest department,” Kumar Sanjay Krishna, Additional Chief Secretary of Assam Home, Political, Revenue & DM department said.
NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) teams have been pressed into service in the flood affected areas for search and rescue operation.
