13 states put on storm alert, Haryana schools closed

New Delhi, May 7 (IBNS): At least 13 states and two union territories have been put on alert after met department predicted that thunderstorms and rain might hit parts of the country.

In its weather forecast for Monday, the IMD said in a statement: "Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds very likely at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura,  Interior Karnataka and Kerala."

Speaking on the national capital, it said: "Thunderstorm accompanied with squall and hail very likely at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab. Thunderstorm accompanied with squall very likely at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi."

The IMD said dust storm might hit parts of Rajasthan on Monday.

According to reports, as a precautionary measure, schools in Haryana have been directed to remain closed for the next two days.

At least 124 people were killed in thunderstorms and lightning which hit five states in the country last week.

The incident left 300 others injured.
