Vodafone Idea narrows Q3 loss to Rs 6,609 cr, ARPU rises 19.3% YoY

New Delhi: Vodafone Idea reported a smaller-than-expected loss for the third quarter, aided by higher per-user revenue following July’s tariff hikes, Reuters reported.

The telecom operator's consolidated net loss narrowed to Rs 6,609 crore ($762.2 million) for the quarter ended December 31, down from Rs 6,986 crore a year earlier.

The figure was better than analysts' forecast of Rs 6,978 crore, according to LSEG data.

The company's average revenue per user (ARPU), a key industry metric, rose 4.2% sequentially and 19.3% year-on-year to Rs 173, driven by increased mobile plan rates.

However, it remained lower than Jio’s Rs 203.30 and Bharti Airtel’s Rs 245.

Despite the revenue boost, Vodafone Idea continued to lose subscribers, with its user base shrinking 2.5% sequentially and 7.2% year-on-year to 199.8 million—significantly trailing Jio’s 482.1 million and Airtel’s 414 million.

Revenue from operations rose 4.2% to Rs 11,117 crore, missing analysts' estimate of Rs 11,254 crore.

Meanwhile, total expenses declined 2.5%, mainly due to lower network costs.

Vodafone Idea, 22.6% owned by the Indian government, was formed in 2018 through the merger of Vodafone Group’s India unit and Aditya Birla Group’s Idea Cellular.

The company has consistently posted losses as it struggles with declining market share.
