Tetra Pak Indian facility gets Platinum certification
Pune, May 7 (IBNS): Global food processing and packaging solutions company Tetra Pak's facility at Chakan town in Pune district of Maharashtra was recently awarded with the Platinum certification for green factory building by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
The Platinum certification is the highest recognition for sustainable building design and is equivalent to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).
The Chakan facility, which commenced operations in 2012 has also become the first facility for Tetra Pak to receive a LEED-equivalent certification, the officials informed.
Speaking on the certification, Tetra Pak South Asia Markets Managing Director Kandarp Singh said, "The Platinum certification validates our commitment towards environment stewardship and sustainable efforts in making the Chakan facility a ‘green site’."
Singh said, "Driving environmental excellence is a strategic priority at Tetra Pak. The Chakan facility is an example of generating sustainable growth for customers with minimum environmental impact."
"With this achievement, we ensure we always stay ahead of the growth curve in terms of capacity, capabilities and sustainability. We are proud that the Chakan facility will now become a global benchmark that others can aspire towards," Singh added.
According to the officials, Tetra Pak received all 81 credits that they applied for, thereby helping it qualify for the prestigious Platinum rating.
The certification was based on an assessment of the site in six categories - sustainable site, water conservation, energy conservation, indoor environmental quality, material conservation and innovation.
The company noted that several initiatives, such as installation of solar panels, rain water harvesting, re-use of waste water and air conditioning from waste heat of generators, have been undertaken at Chakan to develop it into a green site.
Some of the initiatives that were recognised by the IGBC were:
a. Soil erosion prevention and control, including the implementation of mulching, preservation of existing trees onsite and the post-construction erosion and sediment control (ESC) measures.
b. Access to public transport with shuttle services provided for all employees
c. Initiatives to conserve energy such as using heat from our generators to power air-conditioning and usage of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) which also reduce costs.
d. Natural topography and landscape which is in line with the open space requirement of 10%. Additionally, 41% of the site area is landscaped and will be conserved.
