Labour Ministry launches Occupational Shortage Index, multilingual e-Shram microsite

New Delhi: The Ministry of Labour and Employment on Wednesday introduced the Occupational Shortage Index (OSI) to bridge skill gaps and improve employment outcomes by aligning workforce supply with industry demand.

The OSI, developed using International Labour Organization (ILO) methodology and quarterly Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data, will provide data-driven insights into occupations experiencing shortages.

This initiative aims to assist policymakers, training institutions, and businesses in equipping job seekers with skills relevant to high-demand sectors, the ministry stated following the first day of the labour minister’s conference.

Alongside the OSI, the ministry also launched a multilingual e-Shram microsite facility to ensure seamless access to state and central welfare programmes for unorganised workers.

"By leveraging real-time labour market data, we are ensuring that skill development and job matching processes are data-driven and tailored to the actual needs of industries, making our workforce future-ready," said Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya at the event.

The e-Shram microsites, integrated with the national e-Shram database, serve as a one-stop digital platform for unorganised workers to access welfare schemes, employment opportunities, and skilling programmes.

Featuring an easy registration process and multilingual support, the platform enables workers from diverse regions to receive real-time updates on benefits and job opportunities.
