USA : Democrat Jones wins Alabama Senate election, blow to Donald Trump;

| @indiablooms | Dec 13, 2017, at 07:26 pm

Washington DC, Dec 13 (IBNS): In a stunning setback for President Donald Trump, Democrat Doug Jones has won the Senate seat in the deeply conservative southern state of Alabama, media reports said.

The upset makes him the first Democrat in the state to be elected to the Senate in 25 years and reduces the Republicans' majority in the chamber to just two seats.

The result increases the chances of the Democrats retaking the chamber in next year's congressional elections.

The campaign for the election  was marked by accusations of sexual misconduct against Republican candidate Roy Moore.

His defeat is a blow to Donald Trump, who endorsed Moore.

Incensed at Moore's defeat, Trump fired off a tweet Tuesday night, saying Republicans will eventually 'have another shot' at Alabama's Senate

"Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win," the president wrote.

"The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!"

Daily Mail has quoted White House sources as saying that  Donald Trump is 'really upset' over Senate election loss for Roy Moore.
