US: Kamala Harris raises $1.5 million in 24 hours for presidential campaign

Washington DC, Jan 23 (IBNS): US Presidential hopeful Kamala Harris has raised more than $1.5 million within 24 hours of announcing her campaign.

"Thanks to you, we surpassed $1.5 million in grassroots contributions in under 24 hours," Senator Harris tweeted.

Kamala Harris, the Democratic senator from California, on Monday announced that she will be running for the US presidency.

She will be the first Indian-American woman and only the second African-American woman to do so.

Harris made the announcement on Twitter by posting: "I'm running for president. Let's do this together. Join us: http://kamalaharris.org ."

"We’re facing a leadership crisis in the White House. From referring to white supremacists as “very fine people,” to putting children in cages, to sabotaging our country’s health care, we know America can be better than this — but it's on us to build it," she tweeted.

"The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values," the Democratic California senator said. "That's why I'm running for president of the United States. "I'm running to lift those voices, to bring our voices together."

Harris, 54, is a former prosecutor and has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration.

Kamala has a deep Indian connection as she is the daughter of an Indian mother, Syamala Gopalan, from Chennai, and Jamaican father, Donald Harris.

The theme of her campaign has been revealed as "Kamala Harris: For the People".
