Washington, June 1 (IBNS): At least 11 people were killed in a mass shooting incident  in a Virginia Beach city building in the USA on Friday, officials said.

The incident left six others hurt.

The shooter died during a gunfight with the police.

The shooter who opened fire indiscriminately in a Virginia Beach city building Friday afternoon, killing at least 11 people and sending six others to the hospital, was a disgruntled employee, a Virginia government source briefed on the investigation told CNN.

Police Chief James Cervera was quoted as saying by CNN that the gunman was a public utilities worker.

The identities of the 11 victims have not been revealed so far.

The injured people included a policeman. They were reportedly taken to hospital for treatment.

Virginia Senator Tim Kaine reacted to the incident and tweeted: "I’m devastated to learn of the tragic shooting tonight in Virginia Beach. My heart is with everyone who lost a loved one, and I’m praying for a swift recovery for all those who have been injured."

US Senator Kamala Harris said: "Heartbroken for the victims and their families of the Virginia Beach shooting and grateful for the first responders on the scene. This senseless act of violence should not be normal. Too many communities have been shattered by gun violence — we cannot continue to stand idly by."

The FBI is also responding to the incident to provide assistance to local authorities, an FBI spokeswoman told CNN.
