UN Year in Review 2015 looks back at 'pivotal year' for international community
But it was also marked worsening crises around the world, including the Syrian civil war and the refugee flows it caused, the worst outflow in Europe since the Second World War, and the conflicts in Libya, Yemen, South Sudan and elsewhere.
These, combined with the long-term scourges of poverty and hunger, have prompted the UN to seek a record $20 billion in humanitarian aid for the coming year.
The “UN Year in Review 2015,” produced by the UN Department of Public Information, takes a look at the milestones and challenges that marked the past 12 months.
