Twitter suspends 200 Pakistani handles for posting about Kashmir
Islamabad: Micro-blogging site Twitter has suspended 200 Pakistani handles for posting about Jammu and Kashmir in the last one week, a Dawn News report said.
Over the last one week, several Pakistanis have taken to Twitter to report that their accounts were suspended after posting anything about Kashmir, which has been the bone of contention for India and Pakistan after New Delhi scrapped Article 370.
Reportedly, journalists, activists, government employees and fans of Pakistan military had tweeted in support of Kashmir.
Director General of the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor on Sunday said he took up the matter with Twitter and Facebook.
"Pakistan authorities have taken up the case with Twitter and Facebook against suspending Pakistani accounts for posting in support of Kashmir. Indian staff at their regional headquarters is the reason," Ghafoor said as quoted by Dawn News.
Arslan Khalid, Prime Minister Imran Khan's focal person on digital media, said an official complaint has been lodged with Twitter's regional office on Monday.
However, Twitter has denied any bias and said it has enforced its policies judiciously.
A Twitter spokesperson told Dawn, "We believe people on all sides of an issue have a fundamental right to discuss them within the boundaries of our policies, which prohibit terrorism, hateful conduct, platform manipulation, and abuse. At Twitter no one is above our rules.”
On August 5, India took away the special status of Jammu and Kashmir including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) by scrapping Articles 370 and 35A.
While India maintained Kashmir is entirely India's internal matter, Pakistan tried to raise the issue in the global forum.
