Tibetan leader Lobsang Sangay invited to US State Dept for first time in six decades

| @indiablooms | Oct 17, 2020, at 11:48 pm

Lhasa: Lobsang Sangay, President of the Tibetan-government-in-exile, on Friday said he has been invited to the US State Department.

"Great honor to meet with the Special Coordinator on Tibetan Issues @DRL_AS. This is the first time a Sikyong (President) of the Central Tibetan Administration was formally invited inside the State Department," the Tibetan leader tweeted.

The US has named a senior U.S. human rights official as special coordinator for Tibetan issues, a move which might further worsen the already strained relationship between Beijing and Washington.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appointed Robert A. Destro of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor as the United States Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues.

Sangay also met Robert A. Destro.

The appointment was made at a time when relationship between the US and China has deteriorated over recent years on numerous issues including the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
