Thailand: Massive sinkhole disrupts traffic in Bangkok after road collapse

Traffic was disrupted after a section of a busy road in Thailand's capital, Bangkok, collapsed, creating a large sinkhole on Wednesday.

The incident forced authorities to carry out an evacuation in the nearby areas.

No injury was reported.

The incident occurred around 7.13am, with the sinkhole estimated to be 30 metres wide and 30 metres long, reported The Bangkok Post.

Traffic between Vajira and Sanghi intersections was closed for safety reasons, the Dusit District Office told the newspaper.
The videos of the incident has now gone viral on the social media.

The video showed the road slowly collapsing, with cars driving back to avoid falling into the hole.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters after inspecting the scene that repairs to the tunnel and road would take at least a year, reported The Bangkok Post.

Meanwhile, a nearby hospital announced it will close its outpatient service for two days.

According to reports, nearly 3500 inpatients were evacuated from the medical facility.

The hospital structure was not damaged.

Two electric poles and a police vehicle reportedly fell into the hole at the time of the collapse.

The cause of the road collapse still remains unclear.
