Dodoma, Sept 21 (IBNS): At least 100 people were killed as a ferry, in which they were travelling, capsized on Lake Victoria in Tanzania on Thursday, media reports said.

Rescue operation is still going on.

At least 200 people are feared to have been drowned in the tragedy.

Many people are currently missing.

"The MV Nyerere ferry overturned near Ukara island on its way from Bugorora. It is thought the overloaded vessel tipped over when crowds on board moved to one side as it docked," BBC reported.

Local media reports said the ferry was carrying more than 400 passengers when the mishap occurred.

The original carrying capacity fo the ferry was 100.

"We are really saddened and urge the government to provide a new ferry because the old one was small and the population is big." Editha Josephat Magesa, a local resident, told BBC.
