Nairobi/Xinhua/UNI: Somali national forces backed by regional Jubaland state army killed 10 members of al-Shabab extremists in an operation in the southern region of Lower Juba, an official confirmed on Friday.

Abdi Nour Ibrahim Hussein, spokesman of Jubaland state security, told journalists that the Somali army along with the regional forces also seized many al-Shabab bases.

"The forces have been conducting the operations in the last two days in Badhadhe town. We have captured many bases run by the militants during the operation, killing 10 of them and more than 10 others got injured," Hussein said.

He added that two soldiers were killed and a similar number wounded during the confrontation between the army and the militants.

Residents said that the town hosted clashes in the last two days.

The government forces have intensified operations against al-Shabab extremists in southern regions, but the militants still hold swathes of rural areas in those regions, conducting ambushes and planting land mines.
