Washington/UNI: One person was killed while eight others were injured in gunfire that broke out in New York's Harlem during Father's Day weekend.

Police said that nine people, including two women, were shot — one fatally – when gunfire broke out in Harlem early morning, New York Post reported.

The 21-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at Lincoln Medical Center, according to a police official.

The shooting appeared to have happened at a barbecue or another social gathering, according to NYPD Chief Brian McGee.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue at about 12:40 am, according to the NYPD.

"It’s Father's Day weekend. It’s a weekend where people were supposed to be able to enjoy themselves with their families," New York Post quoted Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell as saying.

The Police Commissioner said, "The emboldened individuals responsible for this are exactly who our officers are battling every day to make our city safe."
