Caracas, Aug 17 (IBNS): At least 37 people have been killed in a prison riot in Venezuela's Puerto Ayacucho, the capital of Amazonas state, reports said.

Media reports quoted witnesses as saying that they heard multiple gunshots.

State governor Liborio Guarulla has called it a "massacre".

At least 14 officials were injured in the riot, prosecutors said.

Prison monitoring groups, A Window to Freedom and the Venezuelan Prisons Observatory, have stated that all 37 killed were inmates.

The prison had 105 inmates at the time of the riot.
