Political leaders protest against Islamabad's policies in Gilgit

Gilgit: Political leaders, Awami Action Committee and rights activists gathered in Gilgit city of Pakistan and demonstrated against Islamabad's policies.

The demonstrators described Islamabad's policies as intrusive, exploitative and discriminatory.

The event marked an intensified indigenous resistance to Islamabad's vigorous attempts at expanding its political control over the illegally occupied region, reports ANI.

In the latest move, Pakistan has paved the way for non-natives to gain lease-based control of the hotels and lands in the region, reports the Indian news agency.

President of Awami Action Committee, Gilgit-Baltistan, Fida Hussain told ANI, "They never take us into confidence when decisions regarding our region are taken. They don't ask us if the decisions taken by them are even acceptable to us. The issue is regarding mining in our region, minerals of our region and about the lease of our lands. They take things from us and give them to other provinces. This has also led to a sharp rise in unemployment in the region."

Pakistan had forcefully annexed Gilgit-Baltistan region post the partition of India.
