Pakistan's Jamaat-e-Islami loyalists display placards of executed Bangladeshi Islamist leader at T20 match

Lahore/IBNS: During the recent T20 match between the home side and Bangladesh in Lahore city, several students and Jamaat-e-Islami loyalists in Pakistan displayed a placard in the gallery showing pictures of executed Bangladeshi Islamist leader Motiur Rahman.

This move is seen as a gesture of solidarity shown by a section of Pakistanis towards Bangladeshi JeI, sources said.

The match was played in Gaddafi Stadium on Jan 25.

The placards also showed a text which read 'weareNizami'.

Nizami was hanged by the Bangladesh government in 2016 for crimes during the war of independence from Pakistan in 1971.

The Islamist leader, who drew sympathy from JeI loyalists in Pakistan,  was convicted of genocide, rape and torture.

Nizami had led Bangladesh's largest Islamist party which is known as Jamaat-e-Islami.

Nizami was the fifth and highest-ranked opposition leader to be executed since December 2013 for war crimes, reported BBC.

The Bangladesh Liberation War, also known as the Bangladesh War of Independence, or simply the Liberation War in Bangladesh, was a revolution and armed conflict sparked by the rise of the Bengali nationalist and self-determination movement in what was then East Pakistan during the 1971 Bangladesh genocide.

It resulted in the independence of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

Importance of the T20 match between Bangladesh-Pakistan:

The series was significant as Bangladesh visited and played a series in Pakistan after a long time. Apart from T20 series, Bangladesh is also playing Test and ODI series during their visit. The Test series will form part of the inaugural 2019–21 ICC World Test Championship.

No international cricket team was visiting Pakistan to play cricket for years since the terror attack took place in 2009 when terrorists had targeted the Sri Lankan team bus.

The incident marked the beginning of Pakistan’s international cricket drought.

However, teams like Sri Lanka and now Bangladesh played Test matches in Pakistan to mark a new beginning in the cricket scenario of the country.
