Pakistan: Supreme Court upholds Aasia Bibi's blasphemy acquittal
Islamabad, Jan 29 (IBNS): In a major decision, the Pakistani Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking review of the top court's Oct 31, 2018 verdict of acquitting Christian woman Aasia Bibi.
Bibi has already spent eight years on death row in a blasphemy case.
The petitioner was not able to point out any mistake in the SC verdict acquitting Aasia Bibi, said the CJP, ending Aasia Bibi's final legal hurdle, reported Dawn News.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhel gave the crucial decision which provided relief to the Christian woman.
"Based on merit, this review petition is dismissed," Chief Justice Khosa was quoted as saying by Geo News during the hearing at the apex court, which overturned Asia Bibi´s death sentence for blasphemy last year.
"You could not point out [even] a single mistake in the Supreme Court's verdict," the top judge told the petitioner's lawyer.
Protests and release from prison:
The Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) had protested against the three-day-long mass protest against the acquittal of the Christian woman.
Aasia was released from prison in Multan on Nov 7. She was flown to Islamabad and has been shifted to an undisclosed place amid tight security.
