Pakistan Cabinet sub-committee recommends adding Shahbaz Sharif to Exit Control List that bars him from leaving the country

Islamabad: The Pakistan government's  sub-committee of the federal cabinet has recommended to include the name of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif to the Exit Control List, media reports said.

The Exit Control Lists is a system of border control maintained by the Government of Pakistan under Exit from Pakistan (Control) Ordinance, 1981. Those persons on the list are prohibited from leaving Pakistan.

The move can be seen as a measure taken by the government to put up a pressure on the opposition.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad to announce the development on Wednesday, Minister for Interior Shaikh Rasheed said that Shahbaz (who is a brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif) may petition for a review of the decision within 15 days, reports Geo News.

He said the ministry will make a decision within 90 days of receiving a request for review, adding that the PML-N leader may appear in person, if he so wishes, to make the request.

Speaking in greater detail about Shahbaz's name being placed on a "blacklist", Rasheed said that it was not the case at all.

"The court's decision came with regard to a blacklist. Shahbaz Sharif was not on a black list. He was [...] under an order of May 7, 2021," he was quoted as saying by Geo News, without elaborating any further.
