Pakistan Army chief Bajwa's tenure extended

Islamabad, Aug 19 (IBNS): The Pakistan government on Monday extended the tenure of country's Army chief  Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa for another three years, media reports said.

"General Qamar Javed Bajwa is appointed Chief of Army Staff for another term of three years from the date of completion of current tenure," read the brief notification issued by the prime minister's office, reported Dawn News.

It added that "The decision has been taken in view of the regional security environment."

The notification was personally signed by country's Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Bajwa was appointed as the chief of country's Army in 2016 by former PM Nawaz Sharif.

His extension of tenure occurred at a time when Pakistan and India's relationship reached new lows following the Pulwama attack in February this year.

The recent decision taken by Indian PM Narendra Modi-led government to scrap Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, further hit the relationship between the two nations.

Sources said Gen Bajwa was putting lot of pressure on PM Imran Khan to announce his tenure extension within next few days.

He was afraid that later on the way the situation is turning, sentiment could run against him, the source added further.
