Number of people crossing through Pakistan's Chaman border has spiked since Taliban takeover: Official

Kabul: A border official has said people crossing through Pakistan's South-western Chaman border has increased significantly ever since the Taliban overrun Afghanistan.

"About 18,000 people are now crossing the border on a daily basis," Hameed Ullah, the head of the Coronavirus Health team at the Chaman border told CNN.

In the past, no more than 12,000 people typically crossed the border in a single day, the official told the American media.

On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul.

President Ashraf Ghani resigned and fled the country to prevent what he described as bloodshed that would occur if militants stormed the city.

Many countries have since started evacuating their citizens and diplomatic personnel from Afghanistan.
