Washington: At least five people, including an off-duty police officer, died in a shooting incident which took place in North Carolina on Thursday, police said.

Police said the suspect in the incident has been taken into custody.

" This is still an active investigation. Sections of the Hedingham neighborhood remain closed. Residents should follow the directions of law enforcement officials on the scene," the police tweeted.

“This is a sad and tragic day for the city of Raleigh,”  Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin was quoted as saying by CNN at the news conference. “All of us in Raleigh right now need to come together. We need to support those in our community who have suffered a terrible loss. A loss of a loved one. We need to support the family of the police officer who was killed and also the police officer who was shot.”

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper earlier tweeted: " The swift and coordinated efforts of local and state law enforcement have the suspect in custody and we are thankful for their efforts. We mourn for the victims of this horrific and infuriating act of violence."
