Washington/UNI: Democratic nominee Kamala Harris of Indian origin will be the next United States Vice-President and first woman of colour to hold the second topmost post in the Oval Office as Joe Biden won the US presidential elections, US media said on Saturday.

As per CNN, NBA broadcaster and AP news agency, Mr Biden has crossed the 270 electoral votes-mark.

Fifty six-year-old Harris, will not only be the first woman but also first Indo-African to hold the second top most post in the country's 200-plus-year history.

A US senator from California, Ms Harris has served as San Francisco’s first female district attorney and was California’s first woman of color to be elected attorney general.

Harris' mother and father emigrated from India and Jamaica. She had an aspiration for the President's post as she competed against Biden and others for the 2020 nomination from Democrats.

But she dropped from the race after facing criticism over her views of healthcare and alleged failure to deal with police shootout cases and wrongful conviction cases.

Mr Biden found her appealing to women, coloured and immigrants, particularly after the "Black Lives Matter" protest rocked the American continent. With the results, it seems Ms Harris did what Mr Biden wanted.

Her selection opens a new chapter in US polity of woman representation. She also brings aspirations of non-American in decision making.

"That I am here tonight is a testament to the dedication of generations before me," Harris said during her Democratic National Convention acceptance speech in August.

She is married to attorney Douglas Emhoff, who has two kids from a previous marriage.

Ms Harris's maternal grandfather, Gopalan, hailed from Thulasendrapuram village in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu.
