Is US readying itself to sever ties with UNHRC?

New York, Jun 16 (IBNS): If reports are to be believed, the United States is readying itself to cut down all ties with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

According to a report published by Reuters news agency, the move is 'imminent'.

The US is mulling the move after frequent clashes with the council over Israel.

In recent time, Israel has strengthened its bond with the US as both its leaders, Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump respectively, share a camaraderie.

Trump's liking toward the Netanyahu administration was evident when the former decided to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, causing a rift in the Gaza region.

While Israelites praised the move, neighbour Palestine expressed anger.

As a massive protest erupted, at least 40 Palestinians were gunned down by Israeli forces at the borders.

Rebuffed by the council, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley has expressed her dismay in an op-ed for The Washington Post last June.

In the piece, she has accused the UNHRC of bias against Israel.

"When the council passes more than 70 resolutions against Israel, a country with a strong human rights record, and just seven resolutions against Iran, a country with an abysmal human rights record, you know something is seriously wrong," her piece read.

The US had withdrawn from the council in the past too.

Under President George W Bush, the USA had severed ties with the UNHRC for three years.

However, after Barack Obama took oath as the President, it rejoined the council.

Meanwhile, expressing concern over the US move, Swiss Ambassador Valentin Zellweger told Reuters, "The decision by the Americans will have a profound impact on the Council. If they withdraw, we can expect significant consequences.”
