Tehran: A major fire broke out at Iran's  Evin prison which left at least four people dead and 61 others injured, media reports said.

Sources inside the prison - which is known for housing political prisoners - have told BBC Persian the number of casualties is higher.

Some videos shared on social media showed smoke coming out from the prison.

The fire incident occurred at a time when the nation is witnessing several anti-government protests.

Speaking from inside the prison, Tehran's governor told state TV that there was a riot in a wing of the prison housing petty criminals, reports BBC.
