Iran awaits Trump’s response on Hormuz ceasefire plan as US tightens sanctions

Iran is awaiting a formal response from the United States on its proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and the phased reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, even as Washington imposes fresh sanctions on individuals and companies accused of supporting Tehran’s military procurement network., CBS News reported.

Iran expects formal US response

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran expects Washington to convey its response through Qatari mediators on Tuesday.

The proposal calls for a seven-day ceasefire, followed by the phased restoration of normal maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and a return to broader negotiations.

The plan is linked to conditions Iran says were included in an earlier memorandum of understanding that collapsed.

Tehran has tied progress to measures including sanctions relief, access to frozen Iranian assets and an end to the US naval blockade.

Trump rejects sanctions-relief report

President Donald Trump confirmed that US and Iranian representatives have been communicating through intermediaries in recent days, but rejected an Axios report that he was prepared to offer Tehran sanctions relief and access to frozen funds.

Trump has also publicly dismissed Iran’s latest proposal, leaving the status of the indirect negotiations uncertain.

US officials have indicated that any broader agreement would also need to address Iran’s nuclear programme.

US announces fresh Iran sanctions

Amid the diplomatic uncertainty, the US Treasury Department on Tuesday announced sanctions against 10 individuals and entities in Iran, Hong Kong and Pakistan that it accused of facilitating the procurement of weapons and components for Iran’s Defence Ministry.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration would continue targeting what it describes as financial and procurement networks supporting Iran’s military.

The latest measures are part of Washington’s broader campaign to restrict Tehran’s access to international financial channels and military supplies.

Diplomacy and pressure continue simultaneously

The developments highlight the competing tracks in US-Iran relations: indirect diplomatic contacts through mediators on one side, and continued economic pressure and sanctions on the other.

For now, Tehran is waiting for Washington’s formal position on the Hormuz proposal, while the US has signalled that sanctions pressure will continue as negotiations remain unresolved.
