Influx of migrants continue in Quebec, Canadian government under pressure

Ottawa, Aug 18 (IBNS): The continuous influx of asylum-seeker migrants in large numbers into the country imposed serious pressure on the Canadian government, media reports said on Friday.

The migrants are crossing the border and entering into Quebec in search of asylum.

According to the Star, thousands of migrants entered into Quebec in a few weeks time.

The report also said the figure of influx multiplied rapidly this summer.

The RCMP's released figure was quoted by the Star which suggest around 3000 people entered into the country last month while more than 3000 in the first half of August.

Federal Transport Minister, Marc Garneau , told reporters the government will make shelters for the migrants in a city near Quebec border, Cornwall.

Garneau was quoted by the Star: "There’s no crisis, but it’s a situation that is extraordinary but is very well-managed."

"We actually responded very quickly under the circumstances… One cannot anticipate this kind of event, but one must respond," Graneau added.

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, expressed his concern for the border issue. "Our team is working hard to address the situation at the border," the PM tweeted.

Countering Trudeau's comment, Conservative MP Michelle Rempel tweeted to say: "No, you've broken our system. Check out this thread from me."

Blaming the government's approach towards the whole situation, Conservative MP Michelle Rempel said the government's sought solution is not a long term. She told the Star that such step will only encourage more people to migrate into the country.

In early August, a massive crowd gathered outside Montreal Olympic Stadium to support the asylum seekers who were sheltered in the stadium of Montreal.

The crowd who gathered to showcase their support for the asylum seekers, comprised of few people who earlier sought the same from the Canadian government.
