Indonesia earthquake and tsunami: Death toll touches 1300

Jakarta, Oct 3 (IBNS): At least 1347 people have lost their lives in the recent earthquake and tsunami, which hit Indonesia last week, reports said.

The toll has risen significantly from Tuesday's count, which measured at 844.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the nation's Central Sulawesi province on Friday, stalling normal life.

Among the worst hit areas is the coastal city of Palu, where many have been left stranded without food, running water and electricity.

Meanwhile, with the shortages in food supplies, local police have begun protecting shops from looters.

According to BBC, police have also fired shots and tear gas on Tuesday in order to keep the situation in check.

International aid agency Red Cross has said that an estimated 1.6 million people have been affected.
